Capitalism tells us we deserve nothing until we’ve worked ourselves to the bone.
Capitalism steals our rest.
We were not put here to work two jobs and then do Door Dash on the weekends. We were not put here to work overtime. We were not put here to work jobs END OF SENTENCE. We were put here to do something else. I don’t know what exactly. Make art, yes, but also be in communion with one another, and love, and tend to the earth, and enjoy our time here, and tell jokes and stories and stare at the stars and go swimming and fuck and eat food and help others eat food and sleep. We were put here to do anything besides have a job where we break our backs so someone we’ve never met can hoard wealth.
I’m taking this week off and going to Montana and I’m not going to write or do any work while I’m there, because even though I absolutely love that writing is my job, I still need rest. I’m just going to visit with family and maybe float in a pool and definitely sit and look at mountains.
A Spell for Rest
Turn off your alarm. Make your bedroom as comfortable as possible. Piles of pillows. Piles of blankets. A glass of water. Open your windows so the wind can blow in. Play something nice that reminds you it’s time to rest. Meditation music or something like it. Don’t forget to put in your dream request with the gods. One of them is listening. Do you have a question you want answered in your dreams? Do you want to have fun? Do you want to meet with an old friend and fly around town? Sleep. When you wake up in the morning, don’t get up right away but also don’t look at your phone. You can read a book if you want, but I prefer to sit in silence for a few minutes and let my spirit settle back into this realm. Listen to the sounds outside your window. Maybe you make yourself coffee and then bring it back to bed. Live like there is no work for as long as you can. Thirty minutes. Two hours. Five minutes. Remind yourself you deserve rest, even if you’ve done nothing all week. Everyone deserves rest. What would our world look like without capitalism? Imagine it. Dreaming it up is the first step.
